Autumn Aromas: Why Soy Scents are Better for Your Home

Autumn is our favorite time for decorating the home. Pumpkins, pillows, and all things cozy, fall home décor brings coming home from work or school even more welcoming. Curling up on the couch with a blanket, popcorn, and cider can melt all the stresses of the day away. Yet, it’s not just the physical aspects of the home that we remember. Have you ever walked in the door from a long day, taken a breath and just have a sudden calm? The scents of one’s home can offer a wave of immediate comfort.

Candles are perhaps our favorite way of decorating for fall as they are not only visual but sensual. Fresh apples, pumpkin spice, caramel toffee… the possibilities are endless. However, can we be sure that the sweet aromas that we breathe are in fact safe? Candles made with paraffin wax or synthetic oils can be a less than healthy choice when deciding on your seasonal scents. Paraffin is a petroleum byproduct. When burned, it can release carcinogenic soot. This soot can lead to respiratory problems or further instigate current conditions such as asthma1. While some companies still produce candles with these materials, many are opting for more natural solutions. Soy is growing to be a popular choice among candle lovers, including us.

Soy is natural alternative that burns cleanly in your home. While paraffin candles can produce soot and emissions that are harmful to your health, that soot can also accumulate in your home and on your furnishings over time. Soy on the other hand produces much less soot and does not release the harmful emissions as with paraffin candles.

Soy candles also do not give off as much heat. This allows the candle to burn 30-50% longer than paraffin candles. And, because of soy’s natural and water soluble nature, it also makes cleaning up any unexpected spills easier than paraffin wax2.

While some companies do still produce candles using chemical based materials, many smaller businesses are opting for this more natural approach. One of our personal favorites is Evil Queen Candles. Evil Queen Candles are handmade in L.A., vegan and non-toxic, have 100% cotton wicks (which means no lead wicks for youJ), are 100% Soy and have a 50+ hour burn time. Plus, as an added bonus they are super sassy, making them a fun and memorable gift and talking point.

With so many awesome scents to choose from, it’s hard not to find one you love! Our favorite for Autumn is “Fall Feels”. This fragrance is infused with natural essential oils, including cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, orange, and cedarwood.
